Pool removal in St. Lucie County
An in-ground pool is a concrete box set into the water table. Empty it at the wrong time and groundwater can push the shell upward; fill it badly and the yard settles for years.

A St. Lucie pool can be taken out in one of two ways. Partial removal breaks out the top of the walls, perforates the floor so water can drain, and backfills the shell in place. A full removal takes the whole shell out. The choice affects what can be built on that ground later and what you tell a future buyer, so we set out both before you decide.
Groundwater is the controlling condition. On low lots near the North Fork or the lagoon, the excavation for a full removal can reach water. Romco self-performs dewatering and Support of Excavation, the engineered support that holds the sides of a deep cut, so the pit stays open and stable while the shell comes out.
Access matters in Port St. Lucie, where many back yards still carry a septic tank and drainfield. We locate both and route equipment around them, because loaded machines crossing a drainfield can damage it. Pool equipment, bonding and electrical are disconnected by a licensed electrician before the shell is touched.
We quote pool removal at any size. Send photos of the pool and the access to the back yard.
Order of work
- Walk the yard, check access, and locate septic, utilities and pool equipment.
- Agree partial or full removal and confirm permit needs with the parcel's office.
- Have the electrician disconnect pool equipment and lighting.
- Drain the pool with groundwater controlled, dewatering where needed.
- Break out the shell, or break the top and perforate the floor for a partial removal.
- Backfill in compacted lifts and grade the area.
Watch points
Where this kind of job runs into trouble, and how we handle it
The shell lifting when drained
An empty pool in high groundwater can float. We control water levels around the shell before it is drained and break the floor early in a partial removal so pressure can equalize.
Backfill settling later
Fill dumped in one load settles unevenly. We place clean fill in lifts and compact each one, and leave the area graded so water runs away from the house.
Damage to a septic drainfield or utilities
Back-yard access often crosses buried systems. We locate the tank, drainfield and lines first and keep loaded equipment off them.
Live electrical at the equipment pad
Pumps, lights and bonding stay energized until someone proves otherwise. A licensed electrician disconnects and makes them safe before demolition begins.
Outside our scope
Electrical disconnects, septic work, and any engineering report on the backfill are separate licensed work that we coordinate. We do not assume groundwater sits below the pool floor, and we do not recommend partial or full removal without hearing what you plan to build there.
Questions
About pool removal
Is a partial pool removal enough, or should the whole shell come out?
A partial removal costs less and leaves the broken shell buried; a full removal clears the ground for later building. If you may build over that spot or sell soon, full removal avoids questions later. We quote both so the difference is clear.
Does pool removal need a permit in St. Lucie County?
The county's building FAQ quotes Florida Building Code 102.2, which covers the removal of every building or structure, and its permits apply only to unincorporated land. Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce and St. Lucie Village decide for their own addresses. We confirm with the right office before work starts.
What will my demolition cost in St. Lucie?
We put a number on it once we have seen the job, on site or through photos and plans that show enough. It turns on what the structure is built from, its footprint and height, what the asbestos survey finds, which services need disconnecting, whether a septic tank must be abandoned, how equipment gets in, what sits next door, what you want kept, and the haul to the disposal site. Two houses on the same Port St. Lucie street can quote quite differently, so we do not post rates.
Is any job too small or too large in size for you?
No. We quote a single shed, a screen enclosure, a pool, a mobile home or a full commercial building, and partial jobs where most of the structure stays. Tell us what is on the property and what must remain, and the quote follows that.
Is Romco Builders licensed?
Yes. Romco Builders is a licensed Florida general contractor with its office in Fort Lauderdale. Work that requires its own license, including asbestos abatement, electrical and plumbing disconnects, septic abandonment, mold remediation and tree removal, goes to firms holding that license, and we keep them on one schedule.

Reach out
Phone us or use the form. Include the address, what is coming down, what is staying, and photos or plans if you have them.
We look at the property
We check the structure, where power, water and sewer or septic connect, how equipment and trucks reach the work, and what is next door.
A written scope and quote
It lists what is removed, what is protected and what is hauled, and flags anything that depends on the asbestos survey.
Survey, notice, letters, permit
A licensed asbestos survey, the state demolition notice, the utility letters, then the permit from the city, town or county.
Demolition and hauling
Work follows the agreed order. Debris goes to permitted facilities, and the tickets are kept.
Final inspection
The inspector closes the permit. You get a cleared lot, or the shell you asked us to leave.
